Unlike many of its competitors (including Google), Mr Mail, a UK-based company, provides true privacy and security with its Zimbra email and cloud services, now also including its new free mailboxes and cloud services.
Oliver Bross, Mr Mail technical director, says Mr Mail gathers no details from customer mailboxes for no reason whatsoever.
“We don’t serve up advertising or gather any kind of information at all in order to find advertising opportunities. No exceptions. What you see is what you get – the best email client with brilliant cloud computing applications that provide you the same experience online and offline regardless of your Internet browser or even your operating system,” he says.
This outlines one of the many other advantages that the Zimbra client suite offers over services like Gmail and Google Docs – all of its features online and in the cloud are as accessible and useable offline in the free Zimbra desktop client. Synchronisation is seamless between the two and users have much more choice in how they want to handle their email, calendars, tasks and even documents.
There are other advantages to this set up as well. Getting Gmail and Microsoft Outlook to talk, for example, can be very difficult. Calendar sharing, the synchronisation of tasks, flagging emails or even out-of-office options don’t work across the board. The Zimbra desktop client means that anything done offline is activated online and visa versa, giving clients a true offline experience that includes the synchronisation of documents (which can also be created online), proper calendar sharing, etc. Currently Google’s offline offering does not offer anything more than email downloading.
Online, in certain instances users have to use Google Chrome to get the best out of Google Docs, but with Zimbra users can use any Internet browser of their choice and get the same experience. Plus, it makes no difference if they work on Windows, OSX or Linux – the desktop client works on all these operating systems and the online experience isn’t limited in any way either.
“The online experience is simple and easy too. Because Zimbra uses AJAX the experience consists of dragging and dropping, right-click menus and an intuitive interface. Plus there is online document authoring and there are advanced search features,” Bross says.
Perhaps one of the best advantages of Zimbra are ‘Zimlets’ – plugins that allow the user to begin customising their experience. With Zimbra being open-source there are many Zimlets available, and again these work the same online as they do with the Zimbra Desktop Client.
With Mr Mail, users can also rebrand their mailbox easily, says Bross.
“Even with our free mailboxes, users can have their own domain name. There’s no limitation at all,” he says.
Mr Mail’s free Zimbra mail offerings also include webhosting which ranges from 100MB of webhosting space with the free mailboxes to unlimited space with the pay mailboxes. In terms of mailbox space offerings, the free mailbox provides users with 500MB of space while the product offerings go all the way up to 8GB of mailbox space.
Price-wise, Mr Mail has its free offering while its first pay offering costs £2.50 a month and its most expensive only £5.49 a month. Businesses can also choose to deploy on their own premises, in the cloud or with public servers.
